Juror's Statement:
From Glenda Brown’s self-assured attention to color and design, to Catherine Haverkamp’s darkly abstract interior, I was privileged to see all of your work developing. We each have to find a style that we are comfortable with and then buckle down to the hard and rewarding task of mastering it. Best wishes in your journeys, and may they give you great satisfaction in the years to come.
— Jim Aplin

Tina Whitfield is an artist living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with her husband Don and their Labrador, Bear. She began studying art after retiring from a career in early childhood education, and has had the privilege of planning her own course of study, allowing her to benefit from the teaching expertise of a spectrum of accomplished, award-winning artists.  Tina is continually learning, gaining inspiration from that which other artists past and present have created and shared with the world.  Painting is one of her primary vehicles for expressing the great love and appreciation she has for what she sees in the external world.  It is also a wonderful means for bringing tangible form to what wells up from deep within.  Tina paints commissioned and non-commissioned portraits and figurative work, wildlife, pet portraits, landscapes, still life compositions, and abstract compositions.  Her preferred medium is oil and she also works in pastel. She is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Women Painters of the Southeast, The Chestnut Group and the Portrait Society of America.  Tina has participated in group shows in middle Tennessee and has paintings in both corporate and private collections throughout the south.  In expressing herself through art, she has had the opportunity to offer a visual portal for reflection, enjoyment and healing, and for this she has immense gratitude.

Daud Akhriev

Portrait of the Artist's Mother
oil on linen
20"H x 16"W

“Arts without spirituality are merely decoration.”

The Soviet educational system singled out 8 year-old Daud Akhriev for special arts training. He painted and drew under the best painters and instructors for the next fourteen years. This culminated in a master’s degree from the Russian Academy in Leningrad, after an obligatory two years in the Russian army. Though representational in orientation, Russian Academic philosophy creates a system which encourages sampling, experimenting, and referencing styles and techniques from all of art history. Akhriev is an artist with public works in mosaic, oil on linen, water media, cast bronze monumental sculpture and ceramics. He is comfortable working in decorative styles, designing fabrics and patterns, and is equally at ease switching into Old Master oil painting. He admires Rembrandt and Schiele, Moser and Mailloll, Velasquez, Sargent and Corolla. Akhriev is an Ingush born in Kazakhstan to liberal Muslim parents, educated in a Russian, atheist-communist system which emphasized the Catholic artworks of the Renaissance, and he is married to an American of protestant heritage.  He is old-school and experimental. He creates Episcopalian murals about St. Peter with as much passion as he references the souks of Marrakech. His tiles with saucy, half-nude flamenco dancers in ceramic are very different from his plein aire watercolors of the lake district in northern Italy. He is a sports fan, and loves film and travel. He speaks Russian, Ingush English, and basic Spanish. His extracurricular passion is teaching young artists. He resides in Tennessee and Andalusia, Spain with his artist wife, Melissa Hefferlin.
